HOW ABOUT HOLIDAYS, RETURN TO INDIA, LOCAL TRAVEL?
- There are two holidays in a year. Winter holidays during January for 15 days and summer holidays in July and August for two months. Students usually come back to India during summer. You can also choose to stay back in the summer for local sightseeing and travel in your student life, as you may not get such an opportunity again.

DOES THE STUDENT HAVE TO CARRY WITH HIM WINTER WEAR ETC FROM INDIA?
- Carry one or two sweaters. Winter Clothes such as a jacket, and winter shoes should be purchased overseas as they are cheaper and much better quality than what is available in India. Take two sets of warm woolen inners with you.

WHAT IS THE MEDIUM OF INSTRUCTION IN CLASS – ENGLISH OR LOCAL LANGUAGE?
- For international students, the medium of Instruction is ENGLISH.
PG: CAN I DO POST GRADUATION OVERSEAS? AND PRACTICE IN INDIA
- YES. After your MBBS, you can pursue PG overseas. Inquire for availability of specific courses. Some PG courses are offered in English Medium and some in local language. Each PG course takes 2 to 3 years for completion. After your PG – you need to comply with guidelines of the country where you wish to work in. In India – there are no rules for Doctors with an overseas PG degree; so they do private practice and not Govt. practice. For example: Two very famous Indian heart surgeons Dr. Devi Shetty and Dr. Naresh Trehan are both overseas trained and have roaring private practices but are not eligible for Govt. jobs as their PG is from overseas!!
WHAT IS THE “WORLD HEALTH ORGANIZATION” (WHO) AND WHO DIRECTORY?
- The World Health Organization (WHO) is an international body. Recognizing Medical Institute is by the Government of an individual country and not the WHO. The WHO does publish a “Directory of Medical Institutes”, which is a list of Medical Colleges given to it the Government of each Country. There is NO System of ranking by the WHO as claimed by some agents.
WHAT IS THE SCREENING TEST? HOW DO I REGISTER WITH THE MCI AFTER MY MEDICAL DEGREE OVERSEAS?
- After your Degree overseas - you have to appear for a “Screening test” conducted by the National Board of Education (NBE), New Delhi. This is conducted twice a year; on last Saturday / Sunday of September and on last Saturday / Sunday of March. After you pass it, you file your papers with the MCI, which will give you a Registration Number and you are now legally registered to practice as a medical professional in India.

- Generally a student could stay quite comfortably requiring around US$ 80 - US$ 100 per month. This figure is approximate and would differ from city to city; person to person based on his / her living standards.
IS THERE ANY SCHOLARSHIP OR GRANT AVAILABLE FOR FOREIGN STUDENTS?
- The education abroad is highly subsidized by the Government. Therefore there are no separate scholarships or grants available from individual universities. However, bank loans are now available from all nationalized, co-operative and the private sector banks. These loans are available at very low interest and are generally repaid in easy instalments, one year after the completion of the educational period.
DOES THE STUDENT HAVE TO GIVE ANY ENTRANCE EXAMINATION FOR JOINING THE UNIVERSITY IN MEDICAL ABROAD ?
- NO. Student does not have to appear for any entrance examination. The admissions are based on the 12th standard marks. All admissions are strictly on a first come first served basis.
ARE THE MEDICAL DEGREES FROM FOREIGN MEDICAL SCHOOLS/ UNIVERSITIES RECOGNIZED?
- As per the amendment to the Indian Medical Act, 1956, any Indian student intending to study medicine in any medical college anywhere abroad for a graduate medical course has to obtain an eligibility certificate from the Medical Council of India, New Delhi before joining the medical college abroad. After the successful completion of the course, the student is expected to appear for a screening test conducted by the National Board of Examination (http://www.natboard.nic.in) as required by the Medical Council of India (http://www.mciindia.org) prior to the registration with the Medical Council of India. The academic requirement for the eligibility certificate as defined by the Medical Council of India for the general is an aggregate 50% marks in the Physics / Chemistry and Biology and 40% in case of the reserved category. More details could be obtained from the Medical Council of India either from their office in New Delhi or from their official website.
